Chhath puja 2017: Date, Significance and Things to do

Chhath puja 2017 is going to be held on the 26th of October. The festival also known as Chhath Parva is mainly celebrated in Northern India, especially in the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. This festival is devoted to Chhath Maiya and observed to thank Surya Devta ( Sun God) for his protection and seeking blessing, health, and happiness.

The sixth day of the month of Kartik of the Hindu lunar Bikram Sambat Calendar is when Chhath Puja is celebrated. This year, Chhath Pujofwill be celebrated from 24th October to 27th October 2017. The main puja will be observed on 26th October, 2017.

Chhath Puja 2017: History and Significance of the Festival

Draupadi and the Pandavas performed the Chhath puja as advised by noble sage Dhaumya. Draupadi she saw all her problems vanishing and the Pandavas were also able to regain their lost kingdom, as a direct result of worshipping the sun God.

How is Chhath Puja Celebrated?

The rituals of Chhath puja change every day, as it is celebrated for 4 straight days.

DAY 1: On the first day, the devotees take a dip in the Holy Ganges early in the morning and bring some holy water along to prepare offerings. The house and surroundings are cleaned properly. Devotees consume one meal and observe a fast throughout the day.

DAY 2: The day before Chhath, i.e. the second day, devotees observe a fast for the whole day which ends in the evening post sunset. Before breaking the fast, devotees pray to the sun and the moon and offer kheer, chappatis and bananas to their family and friends as prasad. people come together and mellifluously sing devotional songs for the Chhath puja. Chhath Puja 2017

DAY 3: On the third day, devotees along with their family members go to the river bank and offer prasad to the setting sun. People pray for their happiness and prosperity and folk songs are sung in order to make this day memorable and lively.

DAY 4: The last day, i.e. the fourth day, devotees head to the river bank before the sun rises and make offerings to the rising sun. Those who are fasting break their fast and feast on the prasad along with their friends and family thus bringing an end to the 4 days of the festival.

Chhath Puja 2017: Prasad Prepared During the Festival

The Prasad of Chhath Puja is what makes it special. It consists of sweets like Kheer, Thekua, Laddoos made of rice grit and fruits like sugarcane, sweet lime, and bananas. The food prepared during this festival is pure vegetarian and is cooked without the use of salt, onion, and garlic, just like that of Navratri days. Chhath Puja 2017

    India is a land of festival. Chhath is one of the major festival celebrated in Bihar and surrounding states. The festival is observed on Shukla paksh of karthik month, Since it was celebrated on the sixth day of karthik month it is called chhath parv. Thank you explaining the story behind the festival.
